ELISABETH LONGUENESSE The evolution of the engineering occupation in many arab countries of the Middle East reveals some contradictions in development policies. The gap between the increasing numbers of engineers and the reality of economic needs is an effect of combined state voluntarism and popular aspirations. A comparison between the situation of engineers in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, three countries as close in history as they are different in their present economic and political choices, gives the opportunity to lay stress on the specific role of common constraints and social mechanisms on one hand, and of state policies on the other, in recent evolutions.
