The main goal of this master's thesis is to determine the damage equivalent factors due to the increment in axle weights for the fatigue assessment of existing steel railway bridges in the Finnish railway network. The design lifespan for a bridge in Finland is 100 years. Some steel bridges in Finland are 100 years old or even older, and calculations shown in a case study in chapter 6 of this work indicate that they have reached their fatigue life. However, no damages are occurring in the structures. That is why an accurate measure is needed to evaluate their remaining working lives.
