Engagement in play behaviour has been associated with the presence of positive affective states and, thus, proposed to be an indicator of positive animal welfare. However, the interpretation of play in animals remains challenging due to the complexity of motivating factors. Accordingly, we aimed to clarify whether Yorkshire × Landrace weaner pigs would engage more in play behaviour the more well-nourished they were by examining the effects of weight gain, feeding behaviour, and drinking behaviour on two types of play behaviour [locomotor-rotational play (LOC) and social play (SOC)]. In total, 24 litters [pigs/litter: (mean ± SD) 13 ± 2] raised under conventional husbandry conditions were included in this study. Each pig was manually weighed...
The importance of maternal care in commercial pig production is largely ignored. The sow has little ...
We investigated the post-weaning effect of providing additional objects (i.e. rope, ball, tyre) to c...
In common pig production systems, weaning happens early and abruptly, which contrasts the gradual tr...

AbstractThe aim of this study was to analyse spontaneous play behaviour in litters of domestic pigs ...
This diploma thesis is focused on animal play behaviour, it's features and factors that influence it...
In conventional pig production, suckling pigs are typically weaned between 3-5 weeks of age. This in...
We tested the hypothesis that provision of enrichment in the form of enrichment blocks during the su...
Creep feed intake is variable and may be partly homeostatically and exploratory driven. We studied e...
The welfare of farm animals is currently a topic of both scientific investigation and p...
Play behaviour in pre-weaned piglets has previously been shown to vary consistently between litters....
It is known that tactile stimulation (TS) during ontogeny modifies brain plasticity and enhances the...
