BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data on the association between respiratory function and atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed to assess the relationship between forced expiratory volume (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC and incident AF. METHODS: We performed an analysis of prospectively collected data from the UK Biobank. We included all participants with available spirometry and excluded those with a prior AF. Incident AF was ascertained through hospitalization and death records, and dose-response associations were assessed using multivariable Cox regression analysis with adjustment for known AF risk factors.
