Land, customs and Chinese rites according to History of the beginning and progress of the Company of Jesus in the East Indies (1583) by Alessandro Valignano - Intertextual analysis of a pioneering geo-anthropological description

A Iª Parte de la Historia del principio y progresso de la Compañía de Jesús en las Indias Orientales (1583) do padre Alessandro Valignano, S.J. caracteriza-se por ter sido uma das primeiras crónicas sobre as Missões jesuítas no Oriente. O respectivo manuscrito foi enviado para a Europa logo no ano seguinte, tendo permanecido inédito até 1944. O texto está centrado no relato dos acontecimentos referentes ao período de administração de São Francisco Xavier (1542-1552), mas inclui também uma descrição circunstanciada sobre as realidades materiais, humanas, políticas e religiosas da China. Neste artigo, dissecamos a complexa construção intertextual deste autêntico tratado geo-antropológico sobre a China composto por Valignano, identificando as principais fontes ocidentais e chinesas nas quais o autor se apoiou. Simultaneamente, tratamos de relacionar o contexto específico que esteve na génese deste escrito com a nova estratégia jesuíta para a China traçada pelo próprio Valignano a partir de 1578 e consumada com a chegada a Macau de Michele Ruggieri (1579) e Matteo Ricci (1582).The first part of the Historia del principio y progresso de la Compañía de Jesús en las Indias Orientales (1583) by Fr. Alessandro Valignano S.J. was one of the first chronicles about the Jesuit Missions in the East to be written. The manuscript was sent to Europe in the following year, and was kept unpublished until 1944. The text reports extensively the events related with St. Francis Xavier’s regime (1542-1552), but it also includes a detailed description about Chinese material, human, political, and religious realities. In this article we examine the intricate intertextual structure of this truly geo-anthropological treaty about China, aiming to recognize the main sources used by Valignano, both Western and Chinese. At the same time, we relate the specific context underlining the production of this text with the new Jesuit strategy for China conceived by Valignano himself after 1578 and performed by Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci after their arrival in Macao in 1579 and 1582, respectively.
