The only real attempt to establish large plantations in New Caledonia is linked with the period of immigration from Réunion between 1860 and 1880. Sugar-growing centres and mills were set up with the aim of exporting sugar to Australia. Over the decade 1865-1875 cane-growing expanded and sugar mills sprang up in the south-west part of New Caledonia. Large plantations were established with Indian labour imported from Réunion. But the unknown factors of climate and soil, shortages of labour and capital, and competition from cattle-grazing worked against the success of this Venture, while the 1878 insurrection dealt it its death-blow. From then on to the end of the century sugar-cane growing was confined to the farms of convict concessionaires...
