My child needs tuition! : a study of parental views on primary school education

Singapore’s educational system is evaluated as one of the best systems in the world. Yet, local news reported that increasingly, more Singaporean parents are sending their children for shadow education. Even though the Ministry of Education has made conscious efforts to modify the education system, the trend remains largely the same. The emergence of such a trend tends to create a worrying issue: how did parents come to view shadow education as a safety net if our education system is supposedly good? This research then aims to explore the presence of prestige orientation among Singaporean parents and how various forms of surveillance have led parents to purchase shadow education.Bachelor of Art
