Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) is selected as an advanced numerical method to study the response of rock mass under dynamic loads. The basic concept and theory of the DDA are studied and the unique features of the DDA method to solve the rock mass problems are discussed. Some new subroutines and modifications have been added to the original DDA code to extend its applications. A stress recovery procedure is proposed to improve the stress accuracy over the block-interface. Simulations of the rock mass with underground blast loading and rock mass in scaled blast load test are carried out respectively. Some preliminary understanding and interpretation to the simulation results are given.MASTER OF ENGINEERING (CEE
