Prototyping wireless pulse oximeter

The demographic time bomb has been a major concern for many countries around the globe. Many lives were lost owing to the neglect of one’s health condition. This paper describes the incorporation of ZigBee protocol into medical devices such as Pulse Oximeter. The wireless operating system adopted in this project has a range of 10-75 m coverage to transmit blood oxygenation (SpO2), pulse rate (BPM) and perfusion index (PI) to a centralized computer system. With this patented state of art wireless pulse oximeter, it is believed to bring convenience to various healthcare institutes nationwide, including clinics, government restructured hospitals, private hospitals, and nursing homes and individuals, including patients and elderly. Moreover, since the global market size for pulse oximeter is growing at a rate of 6-8% per annum and similar trend is observed in Singapore market. It implies that with wireless data transmission technology, there will be less administrative work for the healthcare providers; It reduces the risks involved for hardcopy data storage, reducing space usage and time involved in retrieving patient data and that the nurses could better utilize the time to perform other works in hand. Lastly, the graphic user interface (GUI) of this wireless pulse oximeter is designed in such a way that when blood oxygenation (SpO2), pulse rate (BPM) or perfusion index (PI) dropped below a pre-determined value, an alarm would be sound to alert the doctor and nurses. This assured the family members of the patient to have a peaceful state of mind, not having to worry about their love ones of not being attended to when ad hoc situation is triggered.Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
