39 p.The resurgence of Muslim politics in Indonesia has been particularly prominent following the collapse of the Soeharto's regime and the advent of the Reformasi era. The democracy that ensued provided the Islamists with the opportunities to pursue their Islamic agenda. Many of these Islamists have used the 2004 laws on Regional Autonomy to pass Sharia based ordinances at the provincial level namely Padang in West Sumatra, Bulukumba in South Sulawesi and Pamekasan on the island of Madura in East Java.
