39 p.The resurgence of Muslim politics in Indonesia has been particularly prominent following the collapse of the Soeharto's regime and the advent of the Reformasi era. The democracy that ensued provided the Islamists with the opportunities to pursue their Islamic agenda. Many of these Islamists have used the 2004 laws on Regional Autonomy to pass Sharia based ordinances at the provincial level namely Padang in West Sumatra, Bulukumba in South Sulawesi and Pamekasan on the island of Madura in East Java. What follows as a result of these Islamization efforts are attempts at turning Islam into a public religion by regulating certain aspects of the religious practices and promoting only one brand of Islam, often the brand of intolerant and rigid Islam.Master of Science (International Relations
