The perception and practice of filial piety in Singapore

Singapore is currently facing a pressing issue of ageing population. Although the government has implemented various measures to help the elderly live long and well, these policies do not address the root of the problem. This study argues that the promotion of the value of filial piety, which governs people’s filial attitudes and behaviours, could be a solution to the ageing population. This paper aims to study the perception and practice of filial piety in the context of Singapore. Eight filial components have been identified through our literature review. With a research design that involves both survey questionnaires and in-depth interviews, the group is able to find out how these eight filial components are valued relatively among Singaporeans. Statistical analysis of survey results was further carried out to explore the differences in perception of filial piety between generations, genders and among races and religions. Interesting findings from the interviews were also documented and discussed. Based on the research findings, recommendations were suggested to bridge the gap between different parties and implications were also highlighted.
