The proliferation of the volunteer tourism phenomenon is accompanied by critiques from both the media and academics in terms of its effectiveness and impact made on the host communities. The study aims to find out the motivations of volunteer tourists from Singapore and to examine the impact of volunteer tourism experience on the development of the self. Ethnographic fieldwork of participatory nature, with a combination of participant observation, reflection diaries and interviews were used in the study of a 15-day Youth Expedition Project to Laos with 18 participants.Bachelor of Art
