Anaerobic digestion is commonly used to extract sludge from primary and secondary treatment processes of a sewage treatment works (or water reclamation plant as it is now known in Singapore) in order to reduce sludge solids and ensure stabilisation. The anaerobic digestion process breaks down the organic components in the sludge and produces methane gas and carbon dioxide. The methane gas generated can be used as fuel to generate energy for the operation of the works. Both factors have contributed to significant cost savings in the operation of the plant.Master of Science (Environmental Engineering
