Image data compression for multimedia applications on FDDI networks

In the fast changing world of multimedia, there is a growing interest in full-motion, interactive communication. Communications of images over a network has been a problem due to the fact that a large amount of data is required to represent an image. To facilitate communications of such data, compression is necessary. Compression seeks to remove as much as possible, spatial and temporal redundancies in the images, as well as to exploit the weaknesses of the human visual system.
