Study of dependence of cyclist demographics on attitudes towards road safety in singapore

In recent years, there has been a spate of tragic motor accidents involving cyclists, while not all resulted in the death of the cyclist; the danger is still there as long as the cyclists are cycling on the same roads as with other larger and faster vehicles. It is therefore important to have a good understanding of how road safety is perceived by cyclists in Singapore. This research study focused on two parts - a demographical study on cyclists towards road safety while on the roads of Singapore, and how to encourage cycling in Singapore. The data collection and analysis of the project revolved mainly around intensive literature studies and surveys and on-ground interaction with the cyclists. Through the cross-examination of available scholarly articles pertaining to the cycling environment in Singapore and other countries, deductions were made to draw links to why some cyclists would have a particular outlook towards road safety whereas others might have differing views. Analysis of the data has shown that the current trend of cyclists in Singapore is such that donning of protective equipment is not a must for all cycling activities, but is instead situational – their level of caution towards safety changes according to the purpose of cycling.Bachelor of Engineering (Civil
