80 p.Concrete deep beams, referring to beams having span-to-depth ratio of about 5, are structural members with useful applications ranging from pile caps to transfer girders in tall buildings. Deep beams have significant advantages over regular beams in that they can carry much higher loads than the diagonal cracking loads and their flexural behaviour is no longer critical. Deflection is virtually negligible. These advantages, however, have not been fully realized nor utilized in current design practice due to the limited understanding of the structural behaviour of concrete deep beams.RP 52/9
