Most of modern large scale wind turbines operate at variable speed. Variable speed control method maximise the conversion efficiency and the speed can vary so as to reduce strain on the drive train. In addition, to operate the wind turbine above wind speed, pitch controlled blades are usually in widely use now a day. The variable speed pitch regulated turbines has more control flexibility such as better power quality, longer useful life and higher conversion efficiency. However, the variable speed pitch regulated wind turbines require more complex control system.
