Sustainable design factor identification for product-service systems : case studies on smart product

A smart product is known as the integrated devices that able to detect the user, having device-to-device communication and have tracking system. Smart product has played as an important role for the user nowadays. The development of the smart product had become a key factor for an electronic company to support the public demand. Product quality and service will be reflected based on the satisfactory from users. Therefore, continuous development in products had been carried out to suit customer requirements. Smart product development is researched through different aspects, like market demand, user feedback and survey. Different types of smart products are reviewed, and their specification was investigated. Other than the specifications of the smart products, the actual smart product is tested to understand its performance as the point of user’s view. To further develop the smart products, its functionality and feature are discussed with research on product improvement. By selecting the specific product requirements, detailed study on the actual product is performed. The actual product was not only tried out by the researcher, it was also tried by a few users to collect more user feedback. Manufacturing of the smart product is greatly related to this FYP and the knowledge of various manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing technologies are reviewed. Material is another key discussion point for product development because the fabrication of material will determine the type of manufacturing process. Other than that, reverse engineer has been discussed as it is to be used as a tool for researchers to collect actual user data. With the help of the research, a product improvement method is proposed.
