This report is to investigate the low cost optical light sources. Three cost-effective WDM-PON architectures with low cost light sources are evaluated by simulation. This report first investigates the method of WDM-PON with RSOA. In this method, the RSOA at optical network unit (ONU) is responsible to amplify and remodulate the downlink continuous wave (CW) laser light carrying downlink signals for uplink transmissions. Secondly, WDM-PON with injection locked Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) method is studied. Part of the CW light which carries downlink data is used for injection locking the FP-LD at ONU to achieve a single longitudinal mode.
