Much of the work is being devoted to design the techniques that can utilize the resources efficiently and therefore support a large number of users in a limited communication bandwidth. One such method is to deploy a hierarchical cellular system. It basically consists of microcells and macrocells. Overlaid microcells are generally used to serve high traffic areas while the overlaying macrocells serve low traffic areas within the system. An efficient channel assignment scheme can drastically improve the capacity of a hierarchical cellular system.
