In studying the effect of geographical proximity to childcare on mothers’ employment, past research had found mixed results and typically did not attempt to address potential endogeneity problems. Our study adopts an instrumental variable (IV) approach in examining the effect of distance between childcare centres and mothers’ residence on maternal labour market outcomes in Singapore. A proportionate stratified random sample of 400 married mothers aged 21 to 40 from middle-income households were recruited outside childcare centres.
