Properties of ultra high strength concrete

The ultra high strength concrete was analyzed using conventional methods such as following the American Society in Testing and Materials (ASTM), British Standard code of Practice (BS) to carry out mechanical testing for the concrete.The mechanical test analysis determined that the increased compressive strength of the specimen was proportional to the age of specimen and the type of curing methods. Air-cured specimen on day 28 was found to be higher in compressive strength than the other methods, and this could be due to the water cured specimen from this project being directly taken out and tested within the same day. However in literature papers, specimens undergoing water cured were brought out a day in advance to allow excess water to be evaporated that might have resulted in the much higher strength. The modulus of elasticity test was conducted based on the specimen age of 28 under water-cured condition. The result was determined and compared against compressive strength with a COV of less than 10%, indicating consistency and accuracy. The inclusion of supplementary materials such as slag cement and silica fume, with its chemical properties will chemically agglomerate the particles together, giving a more cohesive and dense mix. Through the experiment conducted supplementary materials will allow for a higher initial strength increment as compared to one without any supplementary materials. Moreover, the effects and influences that slag and silica fume possessed was determined by experimental test and literature research to define its actual influence and is useful in the making of UHSC for it to be durable and sustainable.Bachelor of Engineering (Civil
