Design of a planar multi-band antenna

61 p.Portable devices, such as mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) or laptop have become increasingly popular nowadays because they can be easily carried with when one is traveling. In addition to their mobility, more and more functions are being integrated into these devices. For example, a range of wireless applications such as TV entertainment, mobile phone and wireless local area network (LAN) access, are expected to be integrated into PDA or even hand phone. Therefore, designing an antenna for such a multifunctional device is a great challenge because those different applications operate at different frequency bands, for example, the UHF band for TV is from 470MHz to 806MHz; GSM mobile system operates on 900MHz band (from 880MHz to 960MHz) and 1800MHz band (from 1710MHz to 1880MHz) and IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN using the band centered at 2.4 GHz. Usually, one type of antenna is designed to satisfy a particular application,[1], [2], [3], but sometimes these applications are required to operate simultaneously within a single device.
