High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC, H.265) is a new video coding standard recently developed by the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG). It serves as the future encoding method to the current and mainstream H.264 which has been around for more than a decade. With the move of video content and broadcast towards the high definition and ultra-high definition spectrum, there is a need for a newer encoding standard which is capable of further bitrate reduction during the compression process, while ensuring that the content quality is not compromised.
