A qualitative study on the factors contributing to the dignity of elderly end-of-life patients in Singapore

There is an increase in awareness on the importance of providing palliative care as palliative care is closely related to the patients’ sense of dignity. However, the current palliative care system in Singapore focuses primarily on physical aspects, neglecting patients’ psychological, emotional and spiritual needs. Additionally, the study of concept of dignity is scant in Singapore and there is a lack of definite understanding as to what factors contribute to elderly end-of-life patients’ sense of dignity. Therefore, a qualitative study has been conducted to delved into these factors. To address the research question, the legacy document of four patients were analysed. It was found that being conduits of wisdom for family, having familial piety and attaining spiritual peace contribute to patients’ sense of dignity. These point to the importance of providing patients with a platform for them to leave words of advices for their family members. This would give patients a peace of mind as they are aware that their family members are in a better position to tackle future challenges. In addition, it is crucial for family members to be aware of the importance of looking after the needs of the patients and spending time with them. Furthermore, due to the negative emotions that may surface as the illness progresses, the psychological wellbeing of the patients must be looked into so as to provide timely psychological support. With patients’ psychological, emotional and spiritual needs in mind, patients would be able to receive holistic care, enhancing their sense of dignity.Bachelor of Art
