Multi-purpose port landscape in Southeast Asia in the next 10 years

Recent research shows that Multipurpose Ports (MPPs) brings economic benefit to a nation due to its role as a convenient gateway of transshipment for variety of cargo. With the effects of globalization, international trade flows in Southeast Asia (SEA) are becoming more diversified, bringing more emphasis on the usage of MPPs. This paper makes a review on the development of landscapes of MPPs in SEA, a region forecasted to experience rapid development in the next decade. The study of the development of MPPs can be divided into two aspects. First would be the analysis of future trade flows and second, the prospects of development. Studying the trade flows suggests potential direction of port development, drawing possible changes in the MPP landscape. Reviewing the prospects of development will determine the constraints the nation has towards developing its MPPs in response to the market demands. The two aspects of development have to be weighed to envision the future of the landscape of MPPs in the next decade. This paper presents useful reference for potential investors with interest in the MPP market of SEA. Future research can be conducted to keep findings updated in response to the dynamic environment or to scope the research into smaller regions for greater detail.Bachelor of Science (Maritime Studies
