Implementation of reconfigurable channel filter for software defined radio receivers

Wireless networks have had a significant impact on the world as far back as World War II. Through the use of wireless networks, information could be sent overseas or behind enemy lines easily, efficiently and more reliably. Since then, wireless networks have continued to develop and their uses have grown significantly. Software Defined Radio (SDR) is fast becoming a crucial element of wireless technology. The fundamental idea of SDR is to replace most of the analog signal processing in the transceivers with digital signal processing in order to provide the advantage of flexibility through reconfiguration or reprogramming. This will enable different air-interfaces to be implemented on a single generic hardware platform. The most computationally intensive part of an SDR receiver is the channelizer, which extracts multiple narrowband channels from a wideband signal. Digital filtering is the core function in the channelizer, which is accomplished using finite impulse response (FIR) filters. In an SDR receiver, the compatibility of the channelizer with different communication standards is guaranteed by its reconfigurability. Apart from reconfigurability, the channelizer needs to be implemented with low-complexity to meet the stringent power and speed requirements of wireless standards. Thus, low power, reconfigurable channel filters are needed for the channelizer of an SDR. The objective of this project is to research and implement reconfigurable channel filter for SDR receivers.
