Furniture inspired by the Malay motif

This project focuses on studying the Malay Islamic motifs and patterns which can be found in everyday objects such as textiles, utensils, houses, weaponry and etc. The concept of traditional Malay Islamic decoration does not only act as an ornamentation nor symbol. In fact, it is functional. (Jamal, A., 1994). The purpose of this research is to integrate the essential essence, significance, meaning, characteristic and structural form of the Malay Islamic motifs and patterns to be translate this integration to functional and meaningful product. Before focusing into the Malay Islamic motifs and patterns, works from architects such as I.M. Pei and Jørn Oberg Utzon were studied in order to understand their methodologies and philosophies especially paring down natural motif for decorative and structural considerations. Pucuk Rebung or bamboo shoot motif is a prominent motif in Malay Islamic culture. The objective of the project is to simplify the Pucuk Rebung motif or bamboo shoot as the thematic design key. Due to globalisation, people tend to negate their cultural background especially in Singapore where is multicultural and modern. The intention of this project is to revive and reflect the traditional motif of Malay Islamic culture in Singapore through every furniture.Bachelor of Fine Art
