Multi-band antennas for ITS applications

Transportation is an indispensable part of people’s daily life. With development of modern society, number of vehicles has increased rapidly. As a result, road safety and road efficiency have become a serious problem that affect people’s daily life. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is an emerging and advanced application with aims to provide safer, more efficient, and greener use of road. Communication and information technologies are widely used in ITS and the performance of the antenna is vital to the success of ITS system. The objective of this project is to study and design multiband antennas that can support multiple applications and operate on different frequency bands with large radiation range in all directions. The design and simulation of antenna was done by High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The operational frequency bands are required to cover LTE, Wifi-5G, and DSRC applications. The design was based on a rectangular monopole antenna with symmetrical ground. The asymmetrical ground plane was designed achieve circular polarization. In order to achieve the goal of multiband operations, serval inverted-L shape strip was added to ground plane one by one. The final antenna design antenna is composed of a rectangular monopole, asymmetric ground plane and the inverted-L strips. The antenna parameters such as reflection coefficient, antenna gain and radiation patterns were analyzed to evaluate the performance of the antenna design.
