Numerous remains of fossil mammals, among which a large variety of individuals and taxa (more than thirty species), have been discovered at the Zouhrah cave in El Harhoura (Morocco) in association with Aterian stone tools. Two different species of fossil Equidae have been identified and coexisted at the site. The first, a true horse of large dimensions, has definite caballine characteristics and affinities with Equus algencus. The second, of lesser size and different morphology, seems to belong to Equus mauntamcus. Equidae are everpresent among the hominids of El Harhoura and are found in all of the archeological levels, although they are better represented in particular levels.
