Located on the northeastern flank of the Popocatepetl volcano in western Puebla, Mexico, the Tetimpa region was devastated by two major volcanic events during Prehispanic times. In the latter half of the first century AD the ancient settlements of Tetimpa were buried by an airfall deposit of pumice that preserved buildings, activity areas and agricultural fields at the same time that it provoked the rapid abandonment of the region and turned the countryside into a barren landscape.
