An intriguing feature of the Shanghai Wu dialect classifier system is that it possesses two general classifiers: -i^/ga?1/ and H/tsa?5/. In this article, we set out to tease apart the differences in their frequency and usage and to consider the larger question of general versus sortal classifiers in three Sinitic languages, namely Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese. It is shown that Д/tsa?5/ acts less like a general classifier than does ^h/ga?1 according to the three main parameters used, and that Shanghainese and Cantonese make greater use of sortal classifiers than does Mandarin.Le dialecte wu de Shanghai se caractérise par l'étonnante particularité de posséder deux classificateurs généraux : 47g3?V et P>/ts3?5/.
