The discovery of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), and the subsequent elucidation of their functional roles, was largely delayed due to the misidentification of non-protein-coding parts of DNA as “junk DNA,” which forced ncRNAs into the shadows of their protein-coding counterparts.
