Deep and dark caves constitute an extremely stable environment that provides very long preservation of anthropogenic and paleontological remains. Some of these, such as human or animal tracks and human Paleolithic parietal art, are found almost exclusively in cave settings. Beyond these striking remains, however, a significant amount of important information about past humans and about their natural environment is available on the floors and walls of numerous cavities. The deep subterranean environment preserves the remains in the middle of a volume that lies at the origin of their accumulation.
