ABSTRACT The figures of Pierre Escrite are painted on two calcite flows in the middle of a rock flake overlooking the Verdon valley. We can identify with certainty only three male red deer. An inventory of deer representations in schematic art shows the frequency of naturalistic details. Artists amplify the symbolic nature of red deer through its association with sunlike signs, male figures (often armed), female deer or figures of the idol. The rock engraving of two juxtaposed but appreciably different deer leads us to propose a parallel between certain aspects of this animal's social life and the rules of a rite of passage for human beings.RÉSUMÉ Les figures de Pierre Escrite sont peintes sur deux coulées de calcite, au centre d'une écaill...
