Ethnozoologie du bestiaire paléolithique

ABSTRACT A very clear (and happy) evolution marks the present Prehistory of Art in its technical and methodological approaches. The days of documentary collections and of wide-ranging early syntheses are gone. From now on the time has come when the works and their contexts are to be precisely analysed. The ethnozoological approach of animal themes, set out by the author, is an integral part of this wide and consensual evolution and comes within the scope of a trend described as "naturalistic". The palaeolithic bestiary reflects neither the abundance nor the economical importance of the animal species but indeed a cultural aspect. Therefore there is a lot to discover from its study thanks to the numerous fields of investigation that ethnozoology generates by its interdisciplinary nature. The public appeal for collaboration between prehistorians, ethologists and zoologists that Hans-Georg Bandi made in 1966 is taken up in this article. While using comparative methods the author points out their limits. He also proposes improving the analysis in order to bring out the nature of the relationships between man and animal and to define some of the directions in which these relationships develop. The study of Palaeolithic art will probably gain from with the réintroduction of the human dimension.RESUME Une évolution très nette (et heureuse) marque la Préhistoire de l'Art actuelle dans ses approches techniques et méthodologiques. Le temps des collectes documentaires et des vastes synthèses anticipées est révolu. Désormais, le moment est venu d'analyser précisément les œuvres et leurs contextes. L'approche ethno- zoologique des thèmes animaliers, exposée par l'auteur, fait partie intégrante de ce vaste mouvement consensuel et s'insère plus précisément dans une tendance dite "naturaliste". Le bestiaire paléolithique ne reflète ni l'abondance, ni l'importance économique des espèces animales, mais bien une thématique culturelle. Il y a donc beaucoup à découvrir de son étude, à la lueur des multiples domaines d'investigation que développe l'ethnozoologie, forte de son caractère interdisciplinaire. L'appel à la collaboration des préhistoriens, des éthologistes et des zoologues, lancé en 1966 par Hans-Georg Bandi, trouve un écho dans cet article. Tout en utilisant les méthodes comparatives, l'auteur insiste sur leurs limites. Il propose également d'aller plus loin dans l'analyse pour mettre en valeur la nature des relations établies entre l'homme et l'animal et pour cerner quelques-unes des directions vers lesquelles ce rapport s'épanouit.
