Medicalization, gender and social inequalities Over the past few decades, Brazil has undergone a spectacular decline in fertility, in the absence of any particular policy incentive. The process that has resulted in smaller families is more a result of growing medicalization and the growth of a medical market, rather than family planning. The struggle against the spread of Aids has also contributed to legitimising the use of condom. This market driven fertility transition has had rather undesirable consequences for reproductive health and rights.
