The term « quartz » is applied to a vast range of raw materials used during the Palaeolithic. In order to avoid technological interpretation mistakes and make easier the communication between the researchers, the terminology used in petrography and technology must be non ambiguous and widely accepted. The following proposals are a first step towards a terminology homogeni- zation. Quartz knapping caracteristics as well as their specific knapping « stigmates » are then reviewed ; this paper is not only based on a wide littérature analysis, but also on experimental quartz knapping data and on palaeolithic collections study.
