Spelling accuracy has been a focus of research on predictors of future reading and spelling ability. Here, we turn to the potential role of spelling fluency, defined here as accurate, effortless, and efficient spelling. In this chapter, we review the available theoretical and empirical literature on spelling fluency to explore what it can tell us about spelling development. We review prior studies of spelling fluency, measured with word writing, alphabet writing, and passage writing fluency to contextualize each metric within the current theory. Educational implications and considerations for future research are discussed herein
