Using measurements from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) on the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS), we characterize and quantify some advantages and applications of the satellite geostationary measurements, compared with those of the polar-orbiting satellites. With eight daily measurements in the western Pacific Ocean, the average GOCI daily coverage of ocean color retrievals reached ∼43.81%, compared to ∼21.77% from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).
