This thesis explores theoretical ideas about the nature of metaphors and develops an account of metaphor that integrates both the rational and the emotional in an attempt to explain and embrace that which has not been theoretically addressed in any well-known theories of metaphor – metaphor’s expressiveness. This thesis argues that novelty is the key source of meaning creation in the interpretative process of metaphors and explains how potentialities are at the core of the comprehension of new meaning.
