This chapter outlines two empirical projects in copyright law in Australia and discusses how they contribute to copyright theory and policy. The first project involves in-depth qualitative interviews with Australian creators. Data from this project reveals a range of motivations for creating copyright works beyond economic incentives. It also demonstrates that the copyright system is as likely to hinder creative production as it is to incentivise it. This project, therefore, challenges existing economic theory about copyright law. The second project involves a large-scale quantitative dataset that measures how Australian audiences fare compared to North American audiences regarding the availability and cost of media content.
