Four pollen profiles from three different localities in Central Switzerland (fig. 1) were studied. The profiles of Obwalden and Nidwalden permit the reconstruction of the vegetation of the Wiirm late glacial and Holocene. Fourteen C-14 measurements define the development of the vegetation. At Obbürgen this development can be traced from the oldest Dryas (~ 13500 BP) untill to the Subboreal (~ 3500 BP) and at Merlialp and at Gerzensee from the Subboreal untill the Subatlantic. The oldest Dryas is illustrated by a steppic flora (Artemisia, Helianthemum : - 13500 - 12500 BP), the Bolling by bush (Hippophâe, Betula ; (~ 12500 - 11600 BP) and the Allerod by a forest (Pinus, Betula : 11600 - 10300 BP).
