How Unemployment Affects Consumption The reduction in income due to unemployment is responsible for household consumption dropping on average by nearly one-quarter. Manual employee households have relatively low initial resources, so unemployment exposes them more to poverty than it does other categories of household. Unemployed couples, isolated persons without employment and the long-term unemployed in this social category have a level of consumption that is half that of households of the same kind untouched by unemployment.
