The desire to know a little more about the Emperor has always aroused curiosity in the peninsula. The political circumstances in Spain have contributed to the extensive Napoleonic bibliography. It includes the epic story of independence and the struggle against bourgeois materialism, both in the verse of Espronceda and during the republican period from 1936-1939, at the height of the civil war.
