Eugenio Di Rienzo, A "History of Ifs" and a "History of Facts": Some Research Perspectives on Italian Historiography of the Revolutionary Period, 1948-2000 This work attempts a synthesis of post-war Italian historiography. In the early 1950s, Gramsci's interpretaion of the risorgimento superseded the political historiography of the 1920s and 1930s. The highly ideological reading of Gramsci's Quaderni led to an interpretaion of the French Revolution as an advance of communism. At the same period, the renewal of traditional political historiography resulted in a critique of the excessive attention paid to the extreme moment of the Revolution, at the expense of a study of mainstream "jacobinism" largely made up of representatives of the enlig...
