Lumières et révolution dans l'historiographie italienne

Anna Maria Rao, Enlightenment and Revolution in Italian Historiography The link between the Enlightenment and the French Revolution has often been stressed by Italian historiography. The majority of 19th century historians dismissed both as the product of abstract reason, which was bound to result in violence. Others, on the contrary, considered the Revolution as the call to arms of Enlightenment philosophy, with its promise of liberty and political participation. This debate was for long influenced by the question of the origins of the risorgimento and its nationalist interpretation which either exalted 18"1 century Italian reforms, unfortunately cut short by the French Revolution, or else, while condemning its excesses, recognized it as the moment that gave birth to a national Italian conscience. This debate held sway till the 1950s and was profoundly marked not only by the different political and historical contexts, but also the changes that affected historical research, its professional status and methodology. As from the 1950s, the revolutionary Italian triennio (1796-1799) was finally recognized as the fundamental moment of the history of contemporary Italy. Likewise, the enlightened reform movement of the 18th century regained favour as a subject in its own right, without any teleological connotations.Le lien entre les Lumières et la Révolution française a été généralement souligné par l'historiographie italienne. La plupart des historiens du xixe siècle les condamnaient toutes les deux comme le produit d'une raison abstraite qui ne pouvait que conduire à la violence. D'autres, au contraire, considéraient la Révolution comme le passage à l'action de la philosophie des Lumières, porteuse d'exigences de liberté et de participation politique. Ce débat fut longtemps influencé par la question des origines du Risorgimento et par son interprétation nationaliste, qui, tantôt, exaltait les réformes du xvme siècle italien, malheureusement interrompues par la Révolution française, tantôt, tout en condamnant ses excès, reconnaissait dans celle-ci le moment de naissance d'une conscience nationale italienne. Ce débat se poursuivit jusqu'aux années 1950 et fut profondément lié non seulement aux différents contextes politiques et idéologiques, mais aussi aux transformations qui touchèrent la recherche historique, son statut professionnel et ses méthodes. À partir des années 1950, le triennio révolutionnaire italien (1796-1799) fut enfin reconnu comme un moment fondamental de l'histoire de l'Italie contemporaine. En même temps, le mouvement réformateur éclairé du xvme siècle retrouva une considération autonome et spécifique, en dehors de tout téléologisme.Rao Anna Maria.
