Important changes took place at the outset of the new era in the field of history, both in terms of object and methodology, and also in the issues involved in referring to the past. While the Revolution momentarily thwarted historical studies by throwing scholarship into confusion, it also gave rise to a new interest in history closely related to political experience, and laid the foundations for the teaching of history by the next generation.
