Régis Bertrand, The confraternities in Provence facing the Revolution. In Provence, the religious confraternities before 1789 and the popular societies after 1789 were exceptionally numerous. The coincidence of these two phenomena in Provence is striking. Although the confraternity and the popular societies pursued totally different goals, both established themselves without difficulty. Amongst the communities of Provence, there was a tradition of associations which were accustomed to electing their officers and debating.
