The study of light transport is important in many applications ranging from neutron transport, gas and plasma dynamics, Brownian motion, and photon transport in biological tissues. In medicine, light can be used to investigate tissue physiology up to several centimeters below the surface without the use of harmful radiation. For example, by spectrally resolving the amount of absorbed near-infrared light, concentrations of both oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin can be derived to measure tissue oxygen saturation and blood volume. On the other hand, measuring the dynamic fluctuations of scattered light from circulating red blood cells can be used to quantify the speed of blood flow.
